ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating - Cup of Russia, Day 1 The Cup of Russia opened Friday in Moscow with the Compulsory Dance, the Ladies, Pairs and Men’s Short Programs. Ice Dancing, Compulsory Dance The Compulsory Dance at the Cup of Russia was the Viennese Waltz. The Viennese Waltz is a light and graceful dance which must be skated at a good pace with strongly curved edges, soft knee action, neat and unobtrusive footwork, elegant carriage and pronounced free leg extension, even on the one-beat steps. The feeling of waltzing in a grand ballroom must be projected. The Viennese Waltz was created by Eric van der Weyden and Eva Keats and first performed in London in 1934. To the delight of the home crowd, Russia’s Oksana Domnina/Maxim Shabalin and Jana Khokhlova/Sergei Novitski came in first and second in the Original Dance. Meryl Davis/Charlie White (USA) finished third. Domnina/Shabalin put out a convincing performance of the Viennese Waltz, showing off elegance and technical precision. The European Champions earned 38.77 points (20.00 element score/18.77 program component score) and slightly improved their seasons-best. “We are happy with the way we skated. We’ve worked on a few things since the Cup of China and it paid off, when we look at our technical score. However, we still have problems with our costumes and need to skate in costumes that are a few years old. So emotionally we could have skated better”, Shabalin explained. Khokhlova/Novitski’s Waltz had good flow and was technically strong as well. The World bronze medalists picked up a seasons-best of 36.19 points (18.40/17.79). “We felt we skated better and with more confidence than at the Cup of China”, Khokhlova said. “Obviously, the first competition is always difficult, and now we know where to go from and what to strive for”, she continued. Davis/White delivered also a very good Viennese Waltz, looking very confident in their performance and scored 35.77 points (18.16/17.61), setting a new seasons-best for themselves. “I think we skated fairly well and we’re looking to attack a little bit more and in the free dance. I think the feeling of the Viennese (Waltz) comes a little more naturally to us (as opposed to the Paso Doble that they performed at Skate Canada), we’ve always felt the Waltz. But we improved a lot on the Paso this year, so it’s hard to say which one we prefer. We’ve been working a lot on the Waltz since Skate Canada. We’ve been spending more time on compulsories this year”, Davis commented. www.isu.org

I love their new outfit for CD ;D It's actually an older outfit they have been wearing it since Skate America 2005. They wore it for the Ravensburger Waltz CD at the 2006 Olympics too! www.youtube.com/watch?v=gRDwddSPZwo
