Hello--this is the first time I've commented, and last night was the first time I've seen this wonderful team. I thought they were riveting. Also I loved the "retro" look to Domnina's hair. But does anyone else think her costume was unflattering?

hi Kathy welcome here! I love the color of her dress but I still think it is an odd design. When I first saw it at the European championships I didn't like it at all but now that I've seen it more often I don't notice so much that it is a jacket put on backwards . What I like about it is that it is something different, it stands out, it's not a typical ice dance tango dress. And Maxim looks great in his simple black suit! Here are the start times for the Original Dance www.isuresults.com/results/owg2010/owg10_IceDance_OD_TimeSchedule.pdf

Figure skating: Russians Tango to ice dance lead
Vancouver (AFP) - Under-pressure Russian ice dancers Oksana Domnina and Maxim Shabalin showed few signs of nerves as they tangoed their way to the early lead in Olympic Games ice dancing after the compulsory dance on Friday.
The pressure is on the reigning world champions to keep the figure skating title in Russian hands after Yevgeny Plushenko failed to defend his men's title and the country finished off the podium in pairs for the first time since 1960.
Ice dancing is Russia's last hope of a figure skating title in Vancouver.
Teams from Russia or the former Soviet Union have won gold all but twice since it was first introduced to the Olympic programme in 1976.
Dancing to the "Tango Romantica," Domnina and Shabalin scored a season's best 43.76 to open up a 1.02-point lead on Canadians Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir who sealed their hot latin routine with a kiss.
Meryl Davis and Charlie White of the United States are in third, 2.29 points behind the leaders, after the first round of three.
"I can't say anything about it," said Shabalin of the row over Plushenko's defeat. "I liked the skate of Yevgeny Plushenko that is all I can say.
"We're trying to focus on our skating not on other things.
"We are always trying to handle our nerves and show our best skating and that is what we'll do here."
The Russian duo are also under fire because of their Aboriginal-themed original dance, deemed disrespectful in Australia, which they are set to perform on Sunday.
Sitting in the "Kiss and Cry" area, draped in traditional blankets they have received from representatives of Canadian Aborigines during the week, they insisted they would be sticking with their dance theme on Sunday.
"We had a meeting with the local First Nations and they presented us with the blankets," said Shabalin.
"They were so friendly and kind, they said it should cover our heart and protect us from bad things and wished us good luck.
"We hope that we will become friends, thay is why we we wore it today. We wanted to show we are open to friendship to everyone."
Asked if they would be wearing their controversial costumes of dark bodysuits with swirls in white, red loin cloths and eucalyptus leaves, Shabalin added: "You will see on the day."

Good of them to meet with the First Nations. This probably won't take away much from the controversy but the media will write what they want anyway and will always look for scandals. It seems to me that Oksana and Maxim do a great job of not letting themselves be drawn into the discussion too much. I hope they can stay focused on the dance and improve on their scores from the European Championships.

The figure skating competition at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games continued in Vancouver, Canada, on Friday with the Compulsory Dance. 11, 528 tickets were sold for the event at the Pacific Coliseum.
Domnina/Shabalin (RUS) dance to the lead in the Tango Romantica
Russia’s World Champions Oksana Domnina/Maxim Shabalin danced to the lead in the Tango Romantica Compulsory Dance. Tessa Virtue/Scott Moir of Canada and Meryl Davis/Charlie White (USA) are following close behind.
Domnina/Shabalin put out an excellent performance of the Tango, looking very crisp in each step. The two-time European Champions picked up a season’s best score of 43.76 points (21.92 element score/21.48 program component score) for the first segment of the Ice Dance competition. “Of course we hoped to get high marks. We did our best of the season, but this is only the beginning (of the competition)”, Shabalin said. “We were working really hard in the past three weeks and we feel more confident after the European Championships”, he continued.
Skating last out of the 23 couples, Virtue/Moir excited the home crowd with their elegant and confident performance of the Tango. The two-time World medalists scored 42.74 points (21.40/21.34), which was also a season’s best. “Tessa and I were really pleased with today’s performance. It feels really good to get on to the Olympic ice. We’re looking forward to Sunday and Monday”, Moir told the press.
Davis/White were smooth and solid in their interpretation of the Tango. The Grand Prix Final Champions improved their previous seasons best as well when they earned 41.47 points (20.46/21.01).
“We were very pleased with our performance. It was a great audience and we felt really confident. After being here for a number of days already, it was great to finally get out there”, Davis commented.
2006 Olympic and reigning World silver medalists Tanith Belbin/Benjamin Agosto (USA) remained in contention for a medal. They came in fourth at 40.83 points. European silver medalists Federica Faiella/ Massimo Scali (ITA) are also close to the podium at 39.88 points. 2008 World Champions Isabelle Delobel/ Olivier Schoenfelder (FRA) finished sixth with 37.99 points. The French hadn’t competed since December 2008, following Delobel’s shoulder injury and pregnancy.
The figure skating competition at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games continues Sunday with the Original Dance.

this aboriginal dance was such a bad idea. at first it was entertaining but by now it has completely lost it charm for me. I can watch Faiella and Scali's Tarantello forever it's so sophisticated and beautiful. there were so many things wrong with their performance yesterday I can't believe it. I just want to forget about this dance now and I hope they can skate a beautiful FD. That is one of their better FDs and I hope they will really skate it with passion.

Olympic Figure Skating - Ice Dance 22 Feb 2010 05:32
The figure skating competition at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games continued in Vancouver, Canada, on Sunday with the Free Dance. 11, 583 spectators followed the competition at the Pacific Coliseum. Virtue/Moir (CAN) take the lead in the Original Dance Tessa Virtue/Scott Moir of Canada danced to the lead in what was an exciting Original Dance competition on Sunday. Meryl Davis/Charlie White (USA) moved up from third to second place while Russia’s Oksana Domnina/ Maxim Shabalin, who led after the Compulsory Dance, dropped to third before the final Free Dance. Virtue/Moir showed a passionate Spanish Flamenco that had the crowd on its feet as soon as it ended. The reigning World bronze medalists looked smooth and confident in every step and move. They earned a level four for the lifts and the twizzles, while the two step sequences garnered a level three. Virtue/Moir picked up a seasons best of 68.41 points (32.90 element score/35.51 program component score) for their Original Dance which added up to a total of 111.15 points. “It felt amazing. We just stayed in the moment every step. We were actually quite relaxed. It wasn’t until we were sitting there (after the program) that I realized what had happened”, Virtue said. “Right about now, we have to forget about what we’ve done and focus on the Free Dance. We’re going to skate for our fans and our country”, Moir added. Davis/White sparkled in their Bollywood “Indian Dance” that was highlighted by fast twizzles and precise footwork. The Technical Panel awarded them a level four for three out of the four elements – the lift, the twizzles and the circular step sequence. The side by side footwork was a level three. The Grand Prix final Champions scored a seasons best of 67.08 points (32.60/34.48) and moved up from third to second with 108.55 points overall. “It was an emotionally charged program. We gave everything we had in that program. This definitely gives us momentum to slide right into the Free Dance. We have confidence”, White commented. “When you are able to skate your best, it’s definitely more fun.” World Champions Domnina/Shabalin had chosen an unusual “Aboriginal Dance” and gave a solid performance, but seemed tentative in places. The European Champions had a level four for the curve lift and the twizzles, while the two step sequences were graded a level three. The couple earned 62.84 points (29.80/33.04), a seasons best, but they slipped to third place with 106.60 points overall. “We did well. We did all our elements clean and we’re happier with the performance than at the European Championships”, Shabalin told the press. 2006 Olympic silver medalists Tanith Belbin/Benjamin Agosto (USA), who skated last out of the 23 couples, turned in a romantic “Moldovian Dance” and remained in fourth place with 103.33 points. Federica Faiella/Massimo Scali (ITA) produced lively Tarantella to finish fifth at 100.06 points. Isabelle Delobel/Olivier Schoenfelder (FRA) gave an entertaining performance of their French Can-Can, but their step sequences and twizzles were graded a level two. The 2008 World Champions remained in sixth place with 96.67 points. The figure skating competition at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games continues Monday with the Free Dance.

Aboriginal ? Wow. The body paint was not even close to accurate, it looked like it was finger painted by a 3 year old. The music was American Indian with African drums, what was with that? Because it had some random Digeridoo in it they could justify it as generic Aboriginal? I know wikipedia isn't the best link to provide as accuracy is also questionable on this site but they could have at least started there for research. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aboriginal_music#Traditional_forms_and_instrumentsPlease point out drums? Songs usually tell a story or are used for teaching... The only thing that dance taught me was the blatant disregard for the aboriginal people and Australia. To be honest, the dance they came up with was something they made up, realised it didn't come from any country what so ever and they decided to pick something people knew little about to disguise it. They have made NO attempt to make this remotely close to aboriginal. They should be disqualified as this dance did not originate from a country. "they Inspired us" what a joke.... PS love the weird grin throughout the entire thing and the nose rub.... what the hell?
